Reading speed calculator

Words per minute from a timed passage, plus time for a whole book.

Inputs

Reading speed calculator

3 fields

A whole word count; blank or 0 disables book time. Page counts are not converted to words.

Results are reference estimates. Verify the inputs before making important decisions.

Fill in the fields and the result will appear here automatically.

Divides the words you read by the minutes it took and gives the speed in words per minute, along with the hourly figure. Add the length of a book and the calculator estimates how long it would take at that pace. Speed is all this measures — comprehension is a different question and is not scored here.

How it works

Formula and logic

Speed v = words / minutes. Words per hour = 60v; approximate characters per minute = 6v, where 6 is a chosen characters-per-word assumption, not a measured average. Book time = book words / v, using the unrounded speed before rounding ordinary durations to whole minutes. Read words must be a positive integer; optional book words must be a non-negative integer. Displayed speeds of 1 word per minute or more are rounded to whole words; lower speeds retain a fractional part. Ordinary book durations are rounded to minutes; tiny nonzero durations remain numeric instead of becoming zero.

Example

3000 words in 12 minutes is 250 words per minute.

Fields and units

  • Words read — unitless
  • Time — min
  • Words in the book — unitless

How to use

  • — Read a passage and note how many words it had.
  • — Enter the time it took in minutes.
  • — Optionally add a book length for an estimate.

Limitation
The calculator assigns no norm. Time yourself on material of the relevant difficulty and use your own pace; equal speed does not imply equal comprehension.

FAQ

Does this measure comprehension?

No. It measures pace only. Reading faster with less understanding will still show as a higher number here.

What is a typical adult reading speed?

The calculator assigns no norm. Time yourself on material of the relevant difficulty and use your own pace; equal speed does not imply equal comprehension.

Why is the character count approximate?

It is the word speed multiplied by 6. This is an explicit model assumption; use the text counter for an actual character count.

Do I have to enter a book length?

No, that field is optional. Without it you simply get the speed.
