Shipping per unit calculator

What logistics adds to the cost of one item.

Inputs

Shipping per unit calculator

3 fields

Equal allocation of batch costs without carrier tariffs, weighting factors or automatic return costs.

Fill in the fields and the result will appear here automatically.

Allocates the given batch delivery and packaging costs equally across its units. This distributes a known amount rather than calculating a carrier tariff: the form does not determine how delivery changes with weight, distance or the size of another batch.

How it works

Formula and logic

Per unit = (whole-batch delivery + whole-batch packaging) ÷ number of units. Quantity is a positive whole number and costs are nonnegative. Blank packaging means zero. Allocation is equal, without weight, volume or item-price factors.

Example

Batch delivery 5,000, batch packaging 1,000, quantity 100: total 6,000, per unit 60. Without packaging it is 50 per unit. Both costs zero give zero; quantity zero is invalid.

Fields and units

  • Shipping cost — monetary units
  • Units in the batch — unitless
  • Packaging cost — monetary units

How to use

  • — Enter the delivery cost of the entire batch.
  • — Enter a positive whole batch quantity and, optionally, packaging cost for the entire batch.
  • — Read the equal cost allocated per unit; the packaging field is not a per-item packaging price.

FAQ

Should packaging be included?

Include it if you pay for it per batch. Leave the field empty and only the delivery is spread.

Why must units be whole?

A batch holds whole items; a fractional count means the batch or the data is wrong.

Does this belong in variable costs?

That depends on the carrier contract. A batch may have a fixed charge, weight pricing, bands or a combination. The calculator only divides the entered total and does not classify its cost structure.

What about returns?

Return shipping is a separate cost. Add it to the delivery figure only if you want the fully loaded number.
